Where Butterflies Fill the Sky

Written and illustrated by Zahra Marwan.

“I kept drawing memories from Kuwait and I was surprised that people were resonating with them, both people in Albuquerque and Kuwait. So, I don’t know why, I felt really eager to make a children’s book. And, when I had to make an emergency trip home to help my mom for three months — she lives there, she’s a citizen — I wondered if my feelings were sincere about not being able to live in Kuwait. But every time I leave, I feel the waves of grief again and again and again and again. Like: ‘Oh, I do feel that. I think this is real.’ So I was trying to be honest, I think, about how it felt as a child.” — Zahra Marwan
